Speaker tells of home styles in Western Reserve
WARREN — The many homes constructed throughout the 1800s in Trumbull County had their own unique architectural styles that still attract attention today, according to a local historical society member who addressed the members of the Kirk Club.
Chris Klingemeir of Hartford Historical Society spoke on the different styles of architecture of the early Western Reserve, explaining that some of the finest of the area’s early houses were constructed during a building boom from 1818 to 1825. The style is called barter houses.
‘‘These are the houses most of us believe define what the Western Reserve is. They are the ones people think of,’’ Klingemeir said.
Klingemeir said churches of the early 1800s also were interesting.
The Congregational Church of Hartford was the first church in the Western Reserve built with a spire and high, arch-shaped windows. He said the pulpit area was high and raised, coming out of the wall.
