Whenever I have plans to spend some time with my granddaughter, I always try to find things we can do together, and much of the time, these things involve cooking. Sometimes our cooking is the simple act of making holiday cookies, which is what we did when she visited last Christmas. Last summer, we made breakfast together nearly every day consisting of scrambled eggs and toast because it was the first time she was really old enough to use the stove safely. This year I have plans for the two of us to make cheese. When I was growing up, we bought our cheese, usually as individually wrapped yellow squares, from the grocery store every week. When my own children were young, I would often buy big, soft yellow blocks of processed cheese to make their favorite sandwiches, but more often, because it melted so well over vegetables and was one way to get them to eat things like broccoli and cauliflower.

SMG is the winner

Mayor Jay Williams announced Friday that he is recommending that SMG manage the Chevy Centre for the city. They certainly have the experience, with running over 200 arenas around the world. But none of those arenas are in Youngstown. Eric Ryan and his management company, which has been running the building since Global Entertainment was booted out in October, will stay in place because Williams told City Council Friday that the city wants a local presence at the facility after the fiasco with Global, which was based in Arizona. Williams and his finance director, Dave Bozanich, said leaving Ryan in place also saves money for SMG, because they do not have to devote the resources necessary to start a local network for the arena. What I know of SMG is they used to own the Civic, now Mellon Arena, and were putting the screws to the Pittsburgh Penguins on the lease so bad that it almost drove them to bankruptcy.

American Idol Tour Presale Password

Planning on going to see this year's American Idol Live Tour? The top 10 finalists from this year's FOX reality series will perform at 7 p.m. July 29 at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh and at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday to the general public at all Ticketmaster outlets and by calling 330-747-1212. A presale starts today through tour sponsor Pop Tarts. However, there's another presale from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday online at www.ticketmaster.com. Folks can purchase tickets for the Cleveland show using the password 2008idols. I'm guessing that password will work for Pittsburgh as well. The password isn't that hard to get. Anyone who signed up with tour promoter AEG for email updates probably got it today. But feel free to use it to beat the box office.

Going outside

After two months of grueling weightlifting sessions, the Cleveland Browns can finally go outside and do what they enjoy most -- practicing football. Actually, playing actual games is what players enjoy the most. Practicing can be a nuisance and the reason they think their high salaries are deserved. But after the boredom of weight training, getting out on the plush grass at the team's Berea facility and beginning OTAs (offseason training activities) has to be a relief. It's a good time of the year for coaches that have been sitting in offices wondering what the team will look like next season. Now they get a chance to see if their thoughts are accurate. Browns coach Romeo Crennel will be monitoring many issues during the 12 OTA practices, which lead up to a three-day minicamp in the second week of June. For starters, Crennel has to be anxious to see if quarterback Derek Anderson has made strides.

Jim Cossler, director and Chief Evangelist for the Youngstown Business Incubator, has this update: Just how far the Youngstown Business Incubator has come as a center of excellence for software development really struck home for me late last week during a three-way video conference. Joining with us in Youngstown, Ohio were YBI portfolio companies Zethus Software, M-7 Technologies and our research partner Youngstown State University. Also joining us from Columbus, Ohio and Gaithersburgh, Maryland respectively were scientists from the Ohio Supercomputer Center and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Our goal? To define each partner's responsibility for developing the next generation of laser-based 3D imaging software for advanced manufacturing under our contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Betting on Barkley

Who knew Las Vegas casinos would let you walk in off the street and extend a guy $100,000 in credit at one of the tables? Guess where I'm going for my next vacation? What? You mean guys like me don't rate that kind of special treatment? Charles Barkley, however, is special. Twice on back-to-back days last fall, Barkley was extended $100,000 markers. He promptly lost the $400,000 and left. The Wynn Las Vegas resort has been trying ever since to get Barkley to make good on the debt. According to a civil complaint, the casino has made repeated attempts to collect the debt. Now that the complaint has been made and the story has gone public, Barkley - a former NBA player and a millionaire God knows how many times over - says he will pay. It was all just a big misunderstanding. Barkley said all the casino had to do was call and say, "Hey, you owe us this money." Yeah, I'm betting (no pun intended) Wynn Las Vegas officials never thought of that.

Apology from the 'Marlboro Man'

The Tribune Chronicle doesn't print unsigned letters to the editor, but I received this anonymous letter recently and I though I would share parts of it here. A little funny, it mixes tobacco, a known killer, with Relay for Life, a signature activity of the American Cancer Society. Here it is: "I am writing to admit a mistake I made, and to apologize to everyone who attended last weekendás Relay For Life. "I got up last Saturday and started the normal weekend I have when I get my kids. I grabbed my clothes for the day, I didn't think twice about taking the first shirt in the drawer I came to. Itás not a shirt I usually wear in public. I wear it under my work shirt or only around the house. My daughter asked if I could take them downtown for the Relay. "I had full intention of changing my shirt before we lifet. As usual, I had a hart time getting them ready to go. Upon leaving the house, I had a nagging feeling I had forgotten something. Got my keys? Check.
