Gasoline prices rise overnight, average is almost $4 a gallon

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Gasoline prices at many Ohio service stations have jumped into the shadow of $4 a gallon, just before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Web sites where consumer spotters post prices indicate regular gas spiked to $3.

Whenever I have plans to spend some time with my granddaughter, I always try to find things we can do together, and much of the time, these things involve cooking. Sometimes our cooking is the simple act of making holiday cookies, which is what we did when she visited last Christmas. Last summer, we made breakfast together nearly every day consisting of scrambled eggs and toast because it was the first time she was really old enough to use the stove safely. This year I have plans for the two of us to make cheese. When I was growing up, we bought our cheese, usually as individually wrapped yellow squares, from the grocery store every week. When my own children were young, I would often buy big, soft yellow blocks of processed cheese to make their favorite sandwiches, but more often, because it melted so well over vegetables and was one way to get them to eat things like broccoli and cauliflower.

Are incubators all they're cracked up to be?

Incubators have been in the news a lot during the early part of the week, as Bob Taft visited Youngstown Monday to help christen the new expansion to the Youngstown Business Incubator that bears his name while it was learned the same day that the City of Warren is getting 500 large from the state to help start up one of their own. That's great. I'm all for new businesses. But I have one question? How do these incubators affect both troubled cities overall? Obviously, these businesses are a magnet for people drawn to high tech jobs, but are these people going to live in the cities they're located in? They'll pay the city income taxes in their respective cities, but will these employees who work there choose to live in Youngstown and Warren? New income tax revenue is all well and good, but the heart of the cities are their neighborhoods.

Idol Elimination: The fix is in

“American Idol” had a boxing theme tonight, starting with Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble” and continuing with Jim Lampley commentary and every boxing analogy imaginable. There was one other element that is all-too-common in professional boxing – some questionable judging. Watching the episode on tape tonight (I went to see the new “Indiana Jones” movie in Cleveland instead of watching the show live), it smelled like the fix was in. Yes, David Archuleta probably won the night, but it wasn’t the blow out Simon Cowell made it out to be. First round was at best a draw, and I’d give the edge to Cook. He did a nice job with U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,’’ while there’s no shortage of powerful covers of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.

The Browns might not be included among NFL teams that are big on organized team activities (OTAs). Through the first five of 12 practices, the Browns have lost offensive lineman Ryan Tucker until probably August with hip injury that required surgery and cornerback Daven Holly for the season with a knee injury. The injury to Holly is particularly damaging because of lack of depth and inexperience on the corners. OTAs were never heard of until recent years. Coaches wanting to have more on-field practices than the three-day minicamp were granted 12 extra practices that are spread out over a four-week period. Practices are conducted without pads and minus contact, which is supposed to help avoid serious injuries. The best of plans don't always go as planned. Four years ago then rookie safety Sean Jones tore knee ligaments during one of the Browns' final OTA practices.

New attorney general

Gov. Ted Strickland is not talking about who is on his list of people to replace former Attorney General Marc Dann, who resigned last week and is the subject of a multi-pronged investigation. Don't assume, however, that the person Strickland names as interim will be the person who runs for the unexpired term in November. A top candidate for the job is Treasurer Richard Cordray. But if he becomes attorney general now, his post would become vacant, too. That would require another interim appointment and an election for treasurer in November. To avoid risking a second statewide office, Democrats might name a caretaker attorney general and allow Cordray to run for the unexpired term from his safe seat as treasurer. Should Cordray win, he could resign and it would be too late for a special election to fill his unexpired term. The governor would name a new treasurer who could finish the term and run for a full term in 2010.

The Indians have had Jacobs Field magic off and on since the ballpark opened in 1994. Youngstown State's baseball team will try to see if it can recapture the Eastwood Field magic of four years ago, when an unheralded Penguins team won the Horizon League tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. YSU (23-31, 13-12 Horizon) will open tournament play at 3 p.m. today against Valparaiso, a 6-5 winner over Butler in a play-in game Tuesday at Eastwood Field, home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Penguins used a late-season surge, winning four in a row and five of six at one point, to wind up as the third seed in the tournament. YSU's winning streak included back-to-back non-conference victories over West Virginia and Kent State. The home-field advantage could be a big asset for YSU, which was a much better team at home this season. The Penguins were 13-8 at home, and just 9-21 on the road. They were 1-2 at neutral sites.

Apology from the 'Marlboro Man'

The Tribune Chronicle doesn't print unsigned letters to the editor, but I received this anonymous letter recently and I though I would share parts of it here. A little funny, it mixes tobacco, a known killer, with Relay for Life, a signature activity of the American Cancer Society. Here it is: "I am writing to admit a mistake I made, and to apologize to everyone who attended last weekendás Relay For Life. "I got up last Saturday and started the normal weekend I have when I get my kids. I grabbed my clothes for the day, I didn't think twice about taking the first shirt in the drawer I came to. Itás not a shirt I usually wear in public. I wear it under my work shirt or only around the house. My daughter asked if I could take them downtown for the Relay. "I had full intention of changing my shirt before we lifet. As usual, I had a hart time getting them ready to go. Upon leaving the house, I had a nagging feeling I had forgotten something. Got my keys? Check.
