Summit Rock Showcase update: Weather is Vicious to Skynyrd band; Pink Floyd fans get their Wish

July 27, 2009 - Andy Gray
When I talked to Walt English last week for a story that ran Friday about changes in the schedule for the Summit Rock Showcase concerts at the Warren Community Ampitheatre, the promoter mentioned that they hadn’t had a rain out yet this year.

So much for that record.

The threat of rain forced the cancellation of Saturday’s concert featuring the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band Vicious Cycle. Canceling early allowed English to save some of the expenses committed for lighting and sound, but those expected heavy rains never materialized Saturday evening. However, the threat was there all evening long, which seemed to keep the crowd smaller than usual at the St. Demetrios Grecian Festival that night.

Rather than use one of the September dates English has on hold at the downtown venue, Vicious Cycle now will play “Freebird,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and other southern rockers on Aug. 15. Scheduled headliner Victory Hwy, a tribute to the women of country rock, will be the opening act, and the Allman Brothers tribute band Big House no longer is on the bill. One of the Big House bandmates needs surgery, so the band might not have been able to play anyway.

However, English has added a September show and, judging by the crowd that showed up last year, it’s a big one.

The Pink Floyd tribute band Wish You Were Here will perform on Friday Sept. 11 at the Warren Community Amphitheatre. English was contractually required to wait to announce the show until after Wish You Were Here played at House of Blues in Cleveland over the weekend.

Wish had one of the largest audiences at the amphitheater in 2008.
