County took correct approach, but fee will fail

June 11, 2009 - Frank Robinson
I find myself agreeing with county commissioners on their move to place the proposed $10 license plate fee on the ballot for voters to decide. The commissioners decided Wednesday not to impose the fee on Trumbull County motorists. Apparently, as it stands right now, two separate $5 increases will be on the general election ballot. The proposal comes from Trumbull County Highway Engineer David DeChristofaro. He says the added tax dollars would help provide matching dollars for grants that are available. He originally was seeking $15. I agree with the way the commissioners handled it. I don't agree with the new fee. Per license -- and many people have two cars and some have trailers, motorcycles or boats -- the fee adds up quickly. Just as a precaution, my wife renewed the license on her car for two years. I wonder how that will work out if the tax/fee passes. My prediction right now? Based on the feedback I have been getting, the fee will narrowly be rejected. Most people are saying cut somewhere use the savings for the matching money. That is what we have said in editorials in this newspaper.
