Classic rockers Journey to the Heart of the Covelli Centre

June 1, 2009 - Andy Gray
For its first day as the Covelli Centre, the downtown Youngstown arena made a major concert announcement.

Journey and Heart will play the newly christened venue at 8 p.m. Aug. 15. Journey released most of its hits in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but its music never disappeared. The band’s greatest hits CD has sold more than 14 million copies, and “Don’t Stop Believing” has found new generations of fans thanks to its use in the final episode of “The Sopranos” and last month on the new Fox series “Glee.”

The group had 18 top 40 hits in all, including “Any Way You Want It,” “Open Arms,” “Wheel in the Sky,” ``Separate Ways,” “Stone In Love” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.” Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums) – who were a part of most or all of those hits – are joined by new lead singer Arnel Pineda.

Heart also had a slew of hits in the ‘70s and ‘80s – “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” “Straight On,” “What About Love,” ``These Dreams’’ – and one of its songs attracted renewed attention last year when “Baracuda” frequently was played at Sarah Palin rallies during her vice presidential run. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, who founded Heart, were not happy to be included in the Republican events.

Tickets for the show are $89.50, $69.50 and $49.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. June 13 at all Ticketmaster outlets and by calling 800-745-3000.
