Getting excited for the garden

With the weather warming up a little each day, in spite of the rain, I am getting more and more excited about the garden. One of my co-workers even stopped in briefly on his day off and he was wearing shorts. I’ve been cooped up in the newsroom all morning, but when I asked him if it was really warm enough for shorts, he answered, “It is for me!” It isn’t for me, but just seeing someone else getting their legs out there, gives me hope that warmer weather is on its way.
The raised bed inside the greenhouse is finally built and has a half-yard of top soil in it. By this weekend, I’m hoping to add a few bags of composted manure and some peat to the mix and then I’ll be ready to sow some seeds. I’m hoping to be able to start some tomatoes and peppers, even though its still pretty cold at night. I think they’ll be okay with residual heat from the day as long as we put the heater on low at night to keep the plants from going dormant in temperatures that are too cold. I do expect our daytime temperatures to be unsteady for the next two months, some days going up and others still too cold, but inside the protection of the greenhouse’s plastic corrigated walls and the help of the roof vents, it might be enough to stabilize the temperatures there.
You can get the same effect with a hot bed or even a cold frame if it is well insulated and sealed against the cold, as long as the sun creates enough heat during the day to carry over throughout the night. Just like in our own homes, we can cover our plants with soft blankets to protect them from the cold inside a cold frame. I’ll be posting photos soon.
I started today with a three egg-white cheese omelet, a fresh orange and a mug of Earl Gray tea with two teaspoons sugar. I packed a quick lunch of Healthy Choice soup and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Not shown is a banana that I also had. There is a container of yogurt still in my lunch bag that I might have later, or not, depending on how well my lunch holds me over.
