| | Let's Go ClubbingSeptember 16, 2008 - Joe GormanIf I didn't know any better, I'd think Taran Helms was getting ready for a night of clubbing, judging from the loud, gold shirt and black pants he was wearing in the second day of his trial for the robbery and shooting of South Avenue KFC manager Joe Kaluza in March that left Kaluza paralyzed from the neck down. Maybe Helms thinks he's a player. But it looks like he was the dupe, if you believe the theory prosecutors are laying out, that co-defendant Hattie Gilbert, 20, plotted the crime because she was being evicted by her sister and needed money. So she stalked Kaluza for two weeks, staged an accident and Helms emerged from hiding and robbed and shot Kaluza, prosecutors say. Gilbert confessed to the robbery after she was arrested four days later, but it seems like she threw Helms under the bus because her attorney told jurors Monday she had no knowledge that Kaluza was going to be shot. She also brought the bullets, prosecutors say, with a debit card from her job. So she had to have money for some things. Or maybe she just prioritized. And through it all is the hum of the ventilator that the man who actually worked to support himself and his family now has to use because someone else could not think of getting a job to support themselves. But hey, at least these two are dressed nice
