Another QBWhile Browns' officials sit and wait until Sunday to make their first pick in the NFL draft, they watched another young quarterback enter the AFC North Division. The Baltimore Ravens went into trade mode to end up selecting Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco in the first round The Ravens had the eighth overall pick but traded it to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 26nd overall choice and a pair of third-round picks. The Ravens then traded up with the Houston Texans to acquire the 18th pick used on Flacco. The AFC North now has quarterbacks Carson Palmer (Cincinnati), Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn (Cleveland), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh) and Flacco. The division might not be the best in terms of overall talent in the NFL, but it's loaded with good, young quarterbacks. With the recent decision by Steve McNair to retire, the Ravens are in desperate need for a quarterback. Kyle Boller is the likely starter out of the gate next season, but he's long since proven to be average, at best. Former Ohio State quarterback and 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith is the current backup. The Ravens reportedly had their sights set on Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, who was picked third overall by the Atlanta Falcons. When potential trades up in the first round failed to materialize, the Ravens began thinking about Flacco. Flacco was originally recruited by the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. After redshirting one season, Flacco threw four passes in his redshirt freshman season. He transferrd to Delaware in 2005 set the school record for single-season passing yards (4,623 in 2007) and career completion percentage (63.4).
