Idol Elimination: Idol gets Carey-d away

I’m still shocked that Michael Johns got tossed from “American Idol” last week. Like Kristy Lee Cook, there were a couple weeks that Johns coasted by on his looks, but he’d been one of the stronger contestants lately.

Maybe it was the song choice. I guess Aerosmith’s “Dream On” is inspirational, but the only thing it inspired Steven Tyler and Joe Perry to do in the ‘70s was see how much of Colombia they could fit up their noses. Tonight we get Mariah Carey as a mentor, which would seem to favor Syesha Mercado, especially if the contestants have to draw from Carey’s song catalog.

Carey is everywhere this week promoting her new CD and its first single, “Touch My Body.” I confess that song freaks me out. It’s bouncing along with this chipper little melody and lyrics that fade into the ether, then all of the sudden the words jump out front and center as Carey sings, “I will hunt you down.” Considering some of her past episodes, that’s a scary thought.

You’d be hard-pressed to come up with a mentor I have less interest in watching. If I don’t do a post `Idol’ recap, it’s because I went to Cleveland for a movie and didn’t bother to tape it. But I would guess that Jason Castro could be feeling a little vulnerable on “Mariah Carey Week,” and Kristy Lee’s “Idol” run should be entering its final lap.
