McCain coming to YoungstownSen. John McCain will make a campaign stop April 22 in Youngstown, his campaign confirmed today. The visit will be part of a tour to regions that do not normally see Republican presidential candidates. Youngstown, of course, is a predominately Democratic industrial -- or former industrial -- area. Other stops will be in April 21 in Thomasville, a town of about 4,700 people with a large minority population in rural Alabama and in eastern Kentucky, which is part of the Appalachian region. The David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network reported Tuesday that McCain also may be going to Spanish Harlem in New York city. According to Brady, this is part of a "compassion tour" by McCain. The CBN report prompted Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redferm to say, "Given Sen. McCain's indifference toward the economy and do-nothing approach to the national foreclosure crisis, this effort would more accurately be described as the 'lacking in compassion tour.' " McCain is no stranger to the Mahoning Valley. He campaigned here twice to help former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, who is chairman of McCain's statewide campaign. And McCain is scheduled to be in Trumbull County in July for a fundraiser at the Howland home of real estate developer Brian Ross. No date has been set for that event.
