Daylight-saving time offers the perfect get-out-of-chores pass

March 10, 2013 - Burton Cole (humor columnist)

Daylight-saving time begins today, so don't blow it. It's an excellent opportunity to get out of that nagging to-do list. This excerpt from a past “Burt's Eye View” explains how:

--------

Dear Sweetie,

I'm positive I would have finished all those projects you keep scribbling on that pesky honey-do list, but we switched to daylight-saving time today. What could I do? We have to lose a whole hour today.

We don't get it back until Nov. 1, when daylight-saving time ends. I'm sure I can get to your list then.

I know you wanted that room upstairs painted. Cheer up, Honey. I'll get to it. As soon as I have an hour.

Oh, that cable on the garage door – I suppose it wouldn't take more than 10 or 15 minutes to replace it so the thing will work again.

But really, it's a little late in the season to bring in all the lawn furniture. Winter's pretty much over. See, we don't have to expend any energy hauling it back out again. It's already there.

Then there's the gravel. I thought you'd be happy that I remembered to order a load for our muddy driveway. Honest, I was going to spread it out, too. When I had an hour.

I know you claim that you can't get over that hill of gravel at the end of the drive unless you rev up the engine and get a flying start about 100 yards down the road. Well, you said you wanted more excitement in your life.

I never did understand why people were in such a rush to take down all the Christmas lights. Where's their spirit?

Now that I've lost an hour, I probably can't get to that until November. Of course, that would be about the time to put up the lights again.

If you think about it, daylight-saving time not only is saving us daylight, but a boatload of bother.

So I'll start cleaning up your list in November when the clock falls back.

Oh, it took me an hour to write this note to you. That's OK. I'll just deduct it from the extra time we get Nov. 1.

Love,

Your hard-working man
