Holmgren to Dallas?

November 12, 2012 - Mike McLain
BEREA -- Mike Holmgren is no longer president of the Browns, but if a report is accurate he might be coaching the Dallas Cowboys next season.

Jason La Canfora of "CBSSports.com" reported Sunday that Holmgren would be interested in coaching the Dallas Cowboys if current coach Jason Garrett is fired after this season. The Cowboys are 4-5 this season and 17-16 under Garrett since he was named interim coach midway through the 2010 season.

Holmgren made a special appearance in the Browns' media room to discuss the report Monday.

“I want to make this very clear,” Holmgren said. “The last time I talked to anybody about my future is when I talked to you guys (Browns’ reporters). I haven’t talked to a single soul.

“The second thing is I honestly don’t know what the future holds or what I want to do. Thirdly, I’ve always been bothered by the speculation during the season when coaches are trying to work and are fighting crazy for their jobs. I would never do that to anybody. I have tremendous respect for Jason Garrett.”

The move would make sense. Holmgren hasn't ruled out a return to coaching, and at 64 he still has the passion to walk the sideline. He considers Cowboys owner Jerry Jones a friend, and Jones will likely want to make a splash if he does part ways with Garrett.

There could be a few big-name coaches on the market next year. Holmgren would definitely be one. Eagles coach Andy Reid might be looking for a job if he's let go by Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, and ESPN announcer Jon Gruden is reportedly interested in returning to coaching.

Then there's ex-Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who hasn't coached since 2006. If he plans to get back into the coaching profession, now would seem to be the time.
