The first cut

August 26, 2012 - Mike McLain
BEREA -- The Browns announced their first cuts of the preseson Sunday, releasing seven players to get the roster down to 80 players.

The roster must be reduced to 75 by 4 p.m. Monday.

Waived Sunday were offensive linemen Jake Anderson and Matt Cleveland; defensive backs Emanuel Davis; linebacker JoJo Dickson; punter Spencer Lanning and receivers Carlton Mitchell, Bert Reed, Jermaine Saffold and Owen Spencer.

None of the cut are surprising, with the possibvle exception of Micthell. Mitchell, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2010 draft, was plagued by injuries. With rookies Travis Benjamin and Josh Gordon both playing well in preseason, there was no room on the roster for Mitchell.

Mitchell appeared in 16 games -- five in 2010 and 11 last year. He was used primarily on special teams. He caught three passes for 31 yards, all in 2011.

In addition to Benjamin and Gordon, other receivers expected to make the final cut are Mohamed Massaquoi, Greg Little and probably Jordan Norwood.

The final round of cuts, which will reduce rosters to 53 players, has to be made by 4 p.m. Saturday.

INJURY REPORT: Defensive tackle Scott Paxson (knee), cornerback Dimitri Patterson (ankle) and linebacker Scott Fujita (general soreness) were on the field but not practicing. Safety Usama Young was back to practice. He's missed most of training camp and all three preseason games.

CHANGING PLACES: Running back Brandon Jackson worked with the first team. Montario Hardesty had been with the first unit in place of Trent Richardson, but coach Pat Shurmur obviously isn't pleased that Hardetsy has given up the ball twice on fumbles.
