Gorman's Grab Bag
POSTED:Fri, March 7, 2008 @ 4:54PM
SnowblindWas trying to do a story this weekend on the 15th annivesary of the Blizzard of '93 -- which was also known as the ``Storm of the Century' by weather afficiandos, but no one could remember it.Perhaps I can call it ``The Storm No One Remembers' but I certainly remember it, holed up in my hovel on the West Side with enough movies and potato chips to last a lifetime. When you bring up blizzards, the inevitable response is always the Blizzard of '77, which I vaugely remember -- sled riding with my friends at MVSD park and playing football in the street -- and older folks bring up the granddaddy of them all, the Thanksgiving snowstorm of 1950. I don't know if this storm will measure up, but according to the experts, the winter of '07-08 is supposed to be the snowiest in local annals. And it sure feels like it. My contacts at the police department are still crediting the weather for the downward surge in violent crime thus far this year -- although they are also bracing for some action once the weather clears up for good. I'm just glad this latest blitz didn't hit on Election Day. Imagine trying to vote on a day like today. I am afraid that one of these years we hold an early primary, the weather gods will not take it lightly and zap us with a dose of frightful weather.
