Gorman's Grab Bag

POSTED:Wed, March 5, 2008 @ 5:19PM

The Morning After

The morning after the big election was the big topic as I made my rounds today, primarily the fate of the city school district following the third defeat of its 9.5-mill emergency operating levy Tuesday.

Some people I ran into who do not live in the city were shaking their heads and wondering what would happen to the schools and its children, but I heard several people who live in the city -- and a lot of them are government employees -- grumbling about it being put back on the ballot again.

The fiscal commission overseeing the schools has said the district can not cut its way out of the debt, so maybe they have to get more involved in the next campaign. Perhaps the gravitas they bring to the situation can sway voters that the district does need the extra revenue.

But, the other problem is, what do you say to people who can not afford it? Especially if the millage is increased for the next election. But commission members may be the only people who can cut through the grumbling and general bad karma that voters have regarding the school district.
