School's Out -- For SomeThe news today that the city school district is cutting 140 jobs for the next school year is a bit sobering. But coupled with the fact that Superintendent Dr. Wendy Webb said that combined with cuts last year, the district has cut $14 million out of a $17 million deficit, it is also a bit impressive. But whether this is impressive enough for voters to pass a 9.5-mill levy for the third time Tuesady remains to be seen. My take is this will not sway them because in my travels, one of the top topics of complaint is the city school system. The complainers say that the district is too top heavy with administrators and this year a new complaint has been added: Unruly behavior among students. It seems like at least two or three times a week, there is a police report of someone being arrested in one of the schools. The reports of bad behavior are bad enough -- but people are even more riled up because a lot of these incidents are taking place in brand spanking new digs that were paid for by taxpayers. They complain that administrators are not doing a good enough job of dealing with trouble makers, so therefore, they will not vote for the levy. Truth is, no matter what the school district does, voters in the city I talk to say they just can't afford the extra milage, so they will not vote for the levy no matter what. I don't know what can ever be done to make that opinion change.
