A new challenge

Get out the salad fixin’s, toss out the cookies and get ready for the annual fitness challenge sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle and St. Joseph/St. Elizabeth Health Centers.

Yep, I joined. It’s time to put my advice where my mouth is and see how I can contribute to our team’s charity. The object is to lose weight, of course, but more importantly, it is to practice healthy eating. Just like anything else you practice on a regular basis, if you do it often enough, you can get really good at it.

This means avoiding the downstairs vending machines and bringing lunch to work more often. It means planning, planning and more planning, which is probably the most problematic of the entire process because the problem isn’t sticking to a healthy eating program. The problem is figuring out exactly what is a healthy eating program and then adopting it as our own.

I recently read a blog by a woman who was so frustrated about what to eat that she was ready to just give it all up. After all, we’re told to avoid excessive carbohydrates because they contribute to an expanded waistline. We’re told to avoid protein because it is bad for our kidneys and we’re told to drink gallons of water every day to flush out the toxins and keep ourselves hydrated.

The American Heart Association just released a press release stating we shouldn’t be taking in more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium each day, which is practically impossible in today’s world of hidden salt, sugar and chemicals in nearly all of our foods.

So how does a person manage to stick to a healthy lifestyle without breaking the bank on expensive food items at the grocery store. After all, processed food, like fat and carb-filled boxed mac and cheese and Ramen noodles are cheap, while fresh produce can be a little over the top, especially this time of year when we have to pay the costs for shipping from faraway places.

If you’re curious – I know I am - keep checking back here to see how I do it. From Feb. 10 to April 21 I’ll be reporting what I’m eating, the recipes I come up with and whether or not I’m successful in adopting a healthier way to live without breaking the budget.
