Eating can be a challenge

Anyone who has been on vacation for an extended period of time, knows how hard it is to eat healthy every day.
When I recently spent two weeks in a hotel room in the deep south, finding ways to get our meals without spending a fortune on restaurant food and still get our nutrients was often challenging.
Needless to say, I came home a couple pounds lighter and I wondered if it was the food or the two flights of stairs we climbed at least three times a day to our room.
From our first night in the hotel, we knew we were going to be there at least one week and possibly longer, so we found a grocery store and perused the shelves as to what we could take back to our hotel room that didn’t consist entirely of cookies and bagged snacks. Fortunately, our room had a microwave and small refrigerator, and the refrigerator had a small freezer compartment.
We weren’t sure how much we could fit, so we kept it light that first night, but we were able to find several options in the freezer section that kept us from totally relying on imitation food-like products.
The hotel offered a complete breakfast each morning until 9:30 a.m., but we often found ourselves not dressed in time to make it to the main building that early. We managed to get there about four times and took advantage of the cheese omelets, Belgian waffles, bagels, cereal and juice.
But our saving grace was how we stocked our fridge. We bought frozen organic and vegetarian meals for the freezer, as well as fresh fruit, cereal and low-fat milk in small containers. For snacking, we bought Sun Chips – a healthier alternative to potato chips – as well as dried fruit and nuts.
We usually went out to eat once a day and took advantage of restaurant salads and fresh food restaurants for lunch and an occasional dinner.
I was there with my daughter and granddaughter, and we passed the time building jigsaw puzzles, playing board games and reading our books. We watched very little television, often not even turning on the TV until we settled down for bed. It was used more to lull us to sleep than for watching and we didn’t miss it at all.
If we’d had a proper kitchen, it would have been the perfect time to peruse the local farmer’s markets that are already up and running in the south. Unfortunately, we have to wait several more weeks for our own local farmer’s markets.
