More Community Stars named
March 17, 2010 - Frank Robinson
It was another beautiful banquet honoring a group of people who do so much for the community.
The ninth annual banquet and awards ceremony sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle and the Trumbull-Mercer Chapter of the American Red Cross was held Tuesday evening. A dozen people were honored at th Packard Music Hall for going above and beyond the norm when it comes to helping their communities.
I just want to give a personal congratulations to the people chosen as this year's Community Stars: James Noyes, Katie Watson, Ann and Jim Townley, Don Strock and David J. Kostalansky, Julie Vugrinovich, Earl Parthemer, Barbara Busko, Mary Busko, Ben Rhoads and Terrill Harvey.
I have been to every banquet. It's always a wonderful event. At times, you can look around while someone is being honored and see someone in the audience discreetly wiping a little tear. Or you might see someone whispering in someone's ear, and you know they are saying something nice about the person being honored.
The one overwhelming theme of each year's event is how humble the honorees are. Many are a little shy. Others, not so much. But each and every one of them doesn't think he or she should be honored. They usually say something like, "I am honored to have been chosen for this award," but then go on to say they just do for their community what they think they should be doing,
That simple philosophy is what makes Community Star winners so great.
We're already accepting nominations for next year's event. You can get one by contacting me email@example.com or the main organizer of the event, Sue Shafer, at firstname.lastname@example.org
Again, congratulations to all the honorees selected as this year's Stars -- and all the past winners.
