Eating to Live

As teenagers, we want to be like our favorite celebrities. As young adults, we want to look nice and fit into fashionable clothes. By the time we reach our middle years, we still want all of those things but we find that we also are now concerned with being healthy.

This is where I am today. I am a woman in my mid-fifties of below average height and a body mass index (BMI) above the healthy range.

Like many others who find themselves fighting an expanding waistline as they get older, I ask myself when I approach the scale, how did this happen? Is my character one of weakness and lacking willpower? Is it a busy lifestyle that makes it difficult to make healthy choices, or is it genetics? It might be that as we get older, our metabolism slows down making it harder to burn more calories, but shouldn't our appetites naturally slow down as well?

Those of us of middle age, who raised our children and fed our families and now find ourselves facing a world of food confusion, not to mention our mortality, are constantly struggling with issues of weight and health. Come along with me as I try to make healthy choices, at home, at work, in restaurants and on vacation. And if I lose control once in a while and cheat -- well, you will see that too.

When you check back in tomorrow, you will see the food choices I made today and the reasons behind them. But don’t just come back tomorrow. Check in every day to see my attempts at choosing eating to live over living to eat.
