Browns Blog

Please just go awayThe NFL is without question the nation's most popular sport, but something has to be done with its pathetic excuse of an all-star game. Here's a novel idea: just do away with the Pro Bowl. There's already plenty of bad television. Why worsen the problem by giving viewers three hours of ocean vistas (if I'm not there, I don't want to see it) and football that borders on the ridiculous. None of the players in the Pro Bowl actually "play" the game. They go through the motions as if they're throwing and catching frisbess on a beach. The idea is to enjoy the week leading up to the game, don't get hurt in the game and then enjoy a few more days before heading home. Something I don't understand about what transpired last Sunday in Hawaii was the way area media outlets dealt with the performances of the six Browns players. There were blogs detailing what happened throughout the game. There were stories Monday analyzing the way each of the six played, especially quarterback Derek Anderson. If Browns management would actually use one play from the Pro Bowl to decide how to continue its contract negotiations with the quarterback, it's safe to say the franchise has a problem. The Pro Bowl is glorified flag football. The effort level is 70 percent, at best. Anderson didn't do much during the stretch run of last season to convince me that he's the man for the job in the long run, but I'm not going to gauge him by how he played in the PRO BOWL! The NFL has one year remaining on a contract to host the game in Hawaii. When the contract ends, please put an end to this meaningless exercise of athleticism. Watching a few minutes of the Pro Bowl last Sunday was almost enough to make me watch the Grammy Awards later that night. On second thought, that's not happening.
