Two notes on `Julie & Julia’

August 10, 2009 - Andy Gray
There’s a scene in “Julie & Julia” where Julie Powell – quoting Julia Child’s husband, Paul – tells her spouse, “You are the butter to my bread.”

Turns out she also likes jam.

A couple publications have written stories about Powell’s next memoir, “Cleaving: A Story Of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession.” That book chronicles an affair Powell had with a close friend.

Originally scheduled for release this month to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the movie, “Cleaving” now won’t reach bookstores until next year. Some have speculated the release was delayed so as not to contradict the mostly happy marriage portrayed in the film.

The movie grossed about $20 million in its opening weekend, and many of those moviegoers who also love to cook no doubt will be looking for their own copies of Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

Web shoppers who go to Amazon.com can find a hardback of Volume One for $40 and the paperback version for $30. However, Borders in Howland currently has both Volume One (written with Louisette Bertholle and Simone Beck) and Volume Two (written with Simone Beck) in a hardback box set for only $20. I picked it up Sunday with a 40 percent off coupon, taking the price down to $12.

I don’t know what we’ll cook first, but I can guarantee it won’t be an aspic.
